Family is the first learning community. You learn so many firsts with your family. You learn words, actions, emotions, tones of voice, and facial expressions. You learn how to walk, how to hug and how to share. You learn what and when to share, what it looks like to be sacrificial, selfless. Family shares.
Family is also where we learn about brokenness. Not just what happens when we break something, but even more so how broken this world is. You learn parents and siblings aren’t perfect. You learn not just how to be selfish, but how deep selfishness runs in you. Family teaches you about the world, and a big part of that lesson is that the world is broken. Your family is broken. You are broken. Family shares brokenness.
Praise God, this is not the end of the blog, not the end of your family’s fate or mine. While many families can end simply broken, if you’re reading this, there is a hope and a future. God knows what wonderful amazing things we learn and see in your family. God is also quite familiar with how people turn on each other, families in particular.
As deep as familial brokenness goes, God’s grace for you goes deeper. Jesus became part of a human family, it’s broken shady history, part of a community, part of the very world He made. He took all that broken behavior and history and future with Him to the cross. Our brokenness and His obedience put Him in the grave. But we know three days later the Father raises the Son, the brokenness, sin, and death are defeated, and God’s forgiveness reigns.
God forgives you in Jesus. God forgives your family. He does this so that family may be the place where we also learn His love and forgiveness. Family becomes a place where we can learn grace, peace, and faith, even in the midst of brokenness. Family is where we learn words that build and rebuild. See you Sunday!
