Guard Your Heart: Greedy vs. Generous

By: Rev. Dr. Scott Sommerfeld, Interim Senior Pastor

Today we are in the second week of our new series “Guard Your Heart” and our prayer is that by the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives He will continue transforming me and you from greedy to generous.

What does greedy look like? I know what it sounds like. It sounds like a young child with grasping hands saying “mine!” It is not easy to share the best toys as a child. But our parents helped us open our hands and be generous to others.

Over time I’ve also come to realize that generosity is not just about giving our money to the mission of Christ and those in need, it is also about giving our time and attention to enrich our relationships and giving our skills to help and serve others. What is the same in each of these spheres or dimensions of generosity? The word and act of “giving” is at the heart of all 3 dimensions of generosity.

In other words, when you are called to imitate God by giving cheerfully--God may be messing with you moving you toward any one of these 3 different kinds of generosity:

Relational Generosity,

Service Generosity or

Financial Generosity.

Giving is how we imitate God who gives us all we have and all we need for daily life. And who gave us eternal life through giving His Son Jesus: “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 God did not give His son reluctantly or begrudgingly. He did it with joy. This is why Paul encourages us and all believers everywhere to imitate God’s generosity when He writes:

“Each one must give as he has decide in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." - 2 Corinthians 9:7

The best part is that growing in generosity is very good for the heart and it enriches every relationship. Such blessings do not come from a greedy, closed hand approach to doing life. Lord, make us generous, like You.
