I am so looking forward to sharing God’s Word with you one more time. We will focus on the power of God that drives out all fear. This past month we have been giving attention to guarding our hearts. Guarding our hearts from selfishness, from greed and anything that would keep us from Living Pointed Out—living with a focus that has the best in mind for others. One of the most arresting forces to be on guard against is fear. Fear does not open me up to better care for others, to love them like Jesus loved me. My fear closes me in on myself. Your fear closes you in on yourself. YIKES!
So if we want to be free from debilitating fear that keeps me and you from being the most effective vessels of God’s love and grace what do we do?
God’s word speaks to this. Listen to this… “Perfect love drives out fear…” (1 John 4:18) . Where are you going to find such a perfect love? We know where to find perfect love. It is in God alone. In the sacrifice of Jesus for you and for me…while we were yet sinners. God’s love casts out your fear and my fear. This is why we worship and join together in home Bible study. To remind each other of God’s great love and of God’s great plans for each child of God and for all of us as Trinity Lutheran.
We cannot command fear to depart and go away. But we can starve it out in our thinking. We can stop feeding it. That is..stop giving it our attention. We can use fear thoughts to trigger us to have hope and love thoughts. That is, when your fear thoughts come—use that as a prompt-- to remember God’s great love and plan for us and for our church. I like to replace fear thoughts with these truths from God’s Word:
The Lord watches over you. Psalm 121:5
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. 1 John 4:16
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him… Romans 8:28
Lets starve out fear together as we worship the God of perfect love this weekend!!
